Everyone makes mistakes. Despite knowing this, it’s easy for us to become complacent about our skills and not recognize the small errors we repeatedly make that result in poor design. 1. Knowing Your Type 

Typeface selection may be the most important decision in any design. It is also a decision that many designers avoid, which is a bad habit to get into. Readability is based on a few factors: font family, kerning, tracking and leading. Many good typefaces will look great with only minimal adjustments to the kerning, while some may be impossible to read if they are not aligned properly.

2. Only Using One Size Font 

Smaller fonts and condensed fonts can be used in design, but only when the words are small enough and the message is clear. Large font sizes typically indicate that a text message is meant to convey important or urgent information. The same goes for large typefaces–in most cases they are best reserved for headings or large blocks of text. Large typefaces should be used only when you need to create an impact or communicate something specific.

3. Using Too Many Different Fonts 

You can use many fonts to convey a message, but do so only when necessary or it is essential to the design. While you may think that a design is improved with the addition of multiple fonts, in reality it will most likely be worse. We typically only need one main body font to convey our message and secondary heading or display fonts for emphasis. Too many different fonts just complicate your design and will make it more difficult to read.

4. Not Knowing Which Font Family to Select 

In general, one font family should be selected for the body copy and another one for headlines or subheads. If there are many fonts involved in a design, then they should be standardized so they all look similar. The most important factor is the readability of your message. A study by the International Typeface Association found that text set in a serif font is usually easier to read. When choosing a font to use, think not only about its appearance but also if it has a complimentary look overall with your design and image.

5. Not Paying Attention to Readability 

It is important that all text is easy to read, otherwise the message will not be communicated. There are several factors that will determine how readable your text is: font-size, kerning and leading. The overall size of your text should be determined by its specific function in the design: headlines are larger than body text while small text can be condensed or scaled down in size. 

6. Not Perfecting Your Kerning 

The kerning in your design is just as important as the leading or line-spacing. Improper kerning is one of the most common mistakes designers make and can be easily avoided if you pay close attention to detail while working. Incorrect kerning will ruin the overall appearance of your design and cause your audience to misread specific words or letters. For example, the following image is perfectly well-balanced in terms of spacing and readability. 

7. Not Paying Attention to Color 

Color is one of the most important elements in graphic design and it’s also one of the hardest things to perfect. It’s easy to be overwhelmed by color choices and become paralyzed by picking just one or two colors for your project. The best way to approach color selection is to first create a mood board with as much detail as possible about not just your chosen theme but also your intended target audience. 

8. Not Previewing Your Design 

Before finalizing your design, it is best to preview it on a variety of devices and screens, in both landscape and portrait orientations. The web is viewed in many various dimensions and sizes, so if your design seems messy and unorganized on one screen it will most likely look the same way on another screen or tablet. Make sure that all elements are properly scaled to fit each device your design will be viewed on and review the overall look of the design in every size so you can make any necessary changes before finalizing things.

9. Using Too Many Bright Colored Text 

Using bright or contrasting colors can be important in design but it should be done in moderation. A good balance of color makes for a more interesting and interesting-looking design and the color can help to create the correct mood. Use blue or red text only when it’s appropriate to fit your brand or project and when there is no better alternative. Inconsistent use of bright colors can only make your design more confusing, which leads to a lack of readability. 

10. Using Hot Colors 

Hot colors are extremely distracting and can be attractive in the right context, but they should only be used sparingly or they will make your design look cheap. When you use hot colors, always consider that the customizability of your design is severely restricted. It’s also important to choose your color palette before creating the design so that all of the colors are clean and cohesive, otherwise you may end up with a rainbow-like design instead of one that has clear meaning and purpose behind it.

11. Using Different Font Sizes 

There is a right way and wrong way to use different font sizes in your design. The main body copy should always be the largest and easiest to read while headlines or subheads should be slightly smaller. Typeface size has a direct relationship with readability so if you want people to actually read the text and understand it, you need to make it easy for them. In the above example, we used Open Sans Condensed for mid-size text and Georgia Italic Condensed for small text on various pages throughout the site.

12. Not Using Enough Contrast 

If there’s one piece of design advice that sticks out above all others, it’s this: contrast is fundamental. When you create your design, always keep in mind that the background is usually more important than the foreground and make sure your design stands out. This means using a high contrast color palette, making an interesting background that will help to draw attention, and using text that is clear and easy to read.

13. Not Giving Attention to Contrast 

Dark backgrounds are great for creating a mood since they can highlight features of a photo or image. However, dark backgrounds should only be used for important items such as images and logos or on pages where you want important information to stand out because it will often be hard for people to read it on dark backgrounds. The following design is a great example of how to use contrasting colors effectively. Notice the red font, which stands out strikingly against the dark background.
