Games are traditionally known as a place to escape – it’s difficult to prepare for a journey into the unknown when what you’re looking for could be waiting around the next corner. This is one of the many things that make games so enjoyable, but one thing that most players would never expect in their favorite game is just how much can happen before it’s over. Marin noggenfogger’s lucky coin is the perfect example of this – it could have gone in countless different ways, but it’s the instant power it gives to the player that makes it so memorable.
The coin is just one example of how games can take you on unexpected journeys, but they can be just as unpredictable as they are entertaining. Familiarity breeds contempt (and boredom) and there are many games out there which have inspired players to give players a sense of control over their destiny. Although we tend to embrace change in other aspects of our lives, it’s rare for a game designer to give us the freedom to alter the course of events. This is one area where video games have progressed beyond other mediums, however, and there are some games that reward the player with a variety of choices and endings as opposed to having a singular, definitive conclusion.
There are some games that don’t necessarily let you affect their narrative but rather take the player through an interesting path towards the end. One of the most famous examples of this is Resident Evil . The survival horror genre is notorious for its difficulty and repetition; one playthrough can be long enough to last a lifetime and has seen many variations on various themes. From the very beginning Resident Evil eschews this tradition in favor of giving players an open world to explore during their journey.
1. Unpredictable Adventures
The mansion isn’t designed in a way that makes it easy to move around – there are countless doors and passages designed to throw the player off their path. A large portion of the fun is exploring these areas, but sadly many players out there are lost in the house’s inner workings.
The alternate route to the laboratory is particularly notorious for this, having been hidden so well that few players know about it until years later. What’s interesting about this is how rewarding it is for those who do stumble upon it – a simple alternate path becomes one of the most memorable experiences in gaming history .
Many games have seen a rise in popularity over recent years, with one of the most interesting changes to gaming being how many can now be played on the go. However, there are still some classic titles that have remained near and dear to fans’ hearts, but only thanks to their achievements.
It’s actually quite difficult to find these hidden rewards, and even harder to figure out if you’re going in the right direction. There is usually a bit of trial and error involved, but it is undeniable just how rewarding this feature is for some people. Achievements are great for passing on the fun (and frustration) of gaming to someone else but they’re also great for the player themselves!
While trophies were originally little more than a glorified achievement system, it’s become clear that they are much more than that. Some games have a trophy for beating the game and simply unlocking something, but there are others which present the player with a goal to achieve over the course of their experience.
These trophies can be simple – such as shooting enemies in specific ways – or quite involved, such as finding all the hidden items. The latter is particularly impressive and incentive enough to continue playing even after a frustrating level. There are lots of fun aspects to this feature and it’s great that many games have taken it on board in recent years.
If you haven’t worked out what you need to do to complete a game, then it’s likely that there’s something you can do that lets you finish right at the end. Although, with modern games having multiple endings, it can be quite difficult to figure out where they are – again, if players aren’t paying attention.
The infamous Easter egg in Super Mario 64 is one of the most memorable though and has made it into fanart and various other forms of media over the years. Yes, they may not be as challenging or thrilling as those found in other games but they’re great for ruining someone’s day!
5. The Unusual
Some games go out of their way to subvert player expectations and present us with something we wouldn’t expect. One great example of this comes from Hotline Miami – yes, it’s a simple, one hit kill kind of game, but when you have a gun all the time it’s likely that you’ll try to fight every single enemy coming at you.
This is what Hotline Miami wants though – it gives the player a taste of blood and pain before making them rethink how they play. It’s a great twist that can catch players off guard, but it’s also made for some memorable gameplay experiences .
