Whether you’re a movie buff or not, everyone is going to have opinions about which films are the best.
But what do the numbers say? Recently, data scientists polled film experts and compiled a list of greatest movies of all time.
Read on to find out which ones made the cut.
The movie data gurus at Movielens.org surveyed 186 film critics on which movies they thought were the best in the past century.
The only requirement was that they had to have been released in theatres, not just straight to DVD or online streaming sites.
Experts were told that their selections could be ranked within seven categories: “Breaking Bad,” for example,
could be considered “greatest comedy” or “greatest TV show,” but not both.
Additionally, they could select more than one movie in each category if they felt it was necessary.
The results were logged and analyzed by data scientists, resulting in a ranked list of “greatest movies” of all time. The full list is available on Movielens.org.
More than 250 films were selected as best films in one category or another. See below for the top ten movies in each category.
The site also ranked movies by their average score. Based on the 125,000-plus votes cast, these are the highest-scoring films of all time.
Movielens.org also examined which actors had enjoyed the most longevity in their careers,
based on how many different categories each actor’s films were selected for. Read more about that here .

The Movielens.org experts were surprised by the results, which they noted showed a clear trend toward more recent movies in the top 10,
with nine of the top 10 movies from 2007 or later. Experts also noted that many of their favorite films did not make the top ten,
and predicted that new additions to this list of “Greatest Movies” will continue to come and go as we get older and we view new films in our lifetime.

The site explains in their Methodology section that “This ranking was generated by scanning
all the movies listed in the IMDb.com database in order to extract lists of IDs matching each of the following genres ..
. It is possible that some movies are missing from this ranking because they are not listed in any genre,
or because they are listed under several genres, or because of other reasons.”
