Baked dc is known for its eccentricity, but why does it attract such a large fan base? Let me help you answer that question. Baked dc has been wildly successful in the past few years, with even more donut shops popping up all around DC. In an effort to compete with their rival, Dunkin’ Donuts is preparing to open their 50th store this year near the intersection of Vermont and R Street NW. While the nation’s capital has plenty of bakery options, Baked dc can claim to be Washington DC’s first-ever dedicated donut shop! This success is truly a blessing considering how difficult it can be trying to start your own business today.
Baked dc, while not the first donut shop in the nation’s capital, is not an uncommon story. There are many stories across the country where a couple of people decided to give it a try and are now doing quite well for themselves. When I was in college I was a part-time employee at Baked dc. I believe it was my first job out of college and I loved it so much that I went full-time. The life of Baked dc has changed dramatically over the years, but that hasn’t affected owner John Teska or his partners in any negative way.
1. We’re the only donut shop in Washington DC.
When I initially started working at Baked dc, as most of us did, we were excited because it was our first full-time job. Most of us didn’t think we would be able to last long enough at Baked dc to get rich off of donuts. The reality is that Baked dc has been around for a long time and has been through enough to survive for so long.
Baked dc may not be the first donut shop in Washington DC, but it is without a doubt the only one. This applies to the past and present. There is no competition for Baked dc, so all we have to worry about is making sure our customers are happy and getting other donut shops out of business.
2. We have very low employee turnover.
One of the most important things I’ve learned at Baked dc is that I should focus on my job, not my competitors. I know that may sound obvious, but with the increasing number of donut shops in DC – and the nation for that matter – it’s important to set yourself apart from the competition. As time progresses, I think Baked dc is gaining a lot of popularity and notoriety throughout Washington. It helps that we’re still open 24 hours a day. This gives us greater flexibility in terms of pricing and delivery locations instead of working around store hours like other local businesses do.
To add to John Tesla’s success he does something other businesses don’t often do: he works with his customers directly. A lot of business owners will stay behind the scenes and only offer their input to staff, but John Teska is much more flexible than that. Turntable Kitchen, his restaurant in Foggy Bottom, offers a special of the day where he picks the main dish and creates a three-course meal. This gives him an opportunity to interact with customers individually while they enjoy freshly-cooked food.
3. John Teska focuses on hiring locals rather than out of towners.
John Teska knows that Baked dc’s success comes from the hard work and dedication put forward by staff members like me, so he has implemented policies to give us better opportunities to succeed. We don’t have to worry about working later hours or holidays because John Teska understands that it is difficult for staff members to get off of work. He does an excellent job at providing staff members like me with what we need to succeed and pave the way for our future.
4. It’s easy to navigate through Baked dc.
The whole idea behind Baked dc is that everything should be done quickly. We don’t want our guests to feel like they have to wait for long periods of time for their order. Baked dc makes sure that we are always informed of the most efficient ways to complete our tasks, because we know the importance that efficiency has on customer satisfaction. It’s just common sense: if you can minimize the time between ordering and receiving food, you’re going to have happy customers who will continue to spend more money at your establishment.
5. Focusing on quality ingredients over gimmicks..
There’s no doubt that Baked dc is the best donut shop in town. With our great location and delicious donuts, there is more than enough reason to believe that Baked dc is one of the best in the world. Baked dc has stayed focused on making sure that everything has a purpose. We do things like test our donuts to make sure they have perfect consistency before sending them out to customers, we only use fresh ingredients instead of adding chemical preservatives, and we make sure our staff members are trained properly so that they know how to deal with different situations – whether it’s customer feedback or workplace accidents.
