This article is a complete guide to skateboarding and skateboarding stencils. I’ll teach you everything you need to know in order to become an amazing skateboarder, from picking out the best skateboard, learning basic tricks and making progressions, and finding the right gear for you! Skateboarding can be for anyone with discipline and patience – so what are you waiting for? Let’s get started!
1. Choosing A Skateboard
There are so many skateboards to choose from and it can be quite difficult to find the one that’s right for you. Decide based on what type of skating you will be doing most often, and take your time when choosing a board. This is an investment that can last a lifetime, so be patient and choose a board that suits you.
2. Safety Gear
Always wear proper safety gear while skateboarding! Wearing a helmet is essential, as it protects your head in the event of an accident and is also required by law in many places around the world. Other recommended safety gear for beginners: elbow and knee pads, wrist protectors, ankle protectors, and gloves.
3. The Basic Trick
Take your first step on a skateboard by learning the basic skateboarding trick! Here are some of the most common beginner tricks:
4. The Grip Tape (How To Make Voodoo Dolls)
The grip tape is an old school trick that was originally used to help you balance when holding a skateboard! However, nowadays it can also be used to make simple knots or shapes in various places around a board with your feet! You can use one in between two trucks to create a half-pipe ramp across the top of the truck while making turns or doing ollies. Another place you can use the grip tape is right on the noses of your trucks!
5. Making Progressions
The progression is the way you go from one trick to another and build up your skateboarding skills! Although there are many different tricks, most of them follow a similar step-by-step formula that makes it easy to learn them: Park: Grind: Kickflip (or kick turn): Grind (or slide): Repeat. For example, a basic progression for an ollie is to grind and flip the board in half (jump down)- grind and flip it in half again (jump down)- grind, jump and then grind on top of your board again. This will cause your board and nose to rotate 180 degrees in the air and land on the other side! Pretty easy, right?
6. Crash Decks (How To Make A Board Design)
Crash decks are one of the best ways to create your own unique skateboard, by cutting different shaped boards from wood so you can try out different designs! Wood can be taken from any hardwood material and is a great way for beginners to learn how to make skateboards. When selecting a board shape, take into consideration that you have a board ramp or mini-ramp (a ramp designed for smaller riders/babies). It would be good to make your ramp/mini-ramp first on a piece of paper so you can draw out how you would like it to look! Use a ruler, compass and protractor to help you create your own designs.
7. Skateboarding Brands
There are SO many skateboard brands that make unique boards, it may take a while before finding the right one for you. Although there are many different companies, my favorite is Element Skateboards . They have positive vibes, skateboarding culture and an amazing team of professional skaters who I look up to as role models!
8. Complete Your Skateboard
After choosing a board and putting on grip tape, it’s time to make your skateboard complete! Buy some hardware (the bolts, nuts and washers that hold your truck together), bearings (the wheel bearing that allows your wheels to spin smoothly) and skateboard trucks (the metal parts of the. Complete your skateboard by adding wheels, trucks, bearings and grip tape for grip!
